Canon Abilities: Yelena has no magical powers to speak of, but she has been trained since the age of 6 to be a deadly weapon and has only continued to hone these skills as an adult.
Inventory: Her tactical Black Widow-esque suit, batons, glock 19, and widow's bite.

🦋 Personality

1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?


It would be easy for Yelena to be entirely disillusioned as she grew, but as a small child she believed in a great deal of wonder and magic, in part because of the whimsical nature of her adopted father and her sister fiercely protecting her innocence. She loved magical ponies and stories of princesses and everything in between. She clung to that through the Red Room, the darkness that followed, and even her chemical subjugation didn't entirely kill her belief in the magic of the world.

Of course, magic became easier to believe in when superheroes started showing up and saving the world, and while as an adult Yelena has lost a little of that sparkle it is fairly easily reignited when she sees something that's just beyond her explanation and wonderous. Some things might be horrifying, but the things that are beautiful still give her hope. Still remind her of that little girl who believed if she was good enough and helpful to her parents that a unicorn would show up and take her on a magical ride over a rainbow.


2. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being? Feel free to use our Bestiary for reference.

If she's picking, Yelena would definitely choose Valkyrie. They are a little different in the MCU and more actively badass ladies with wings who also have winged horses and cool swords, who charge into battle and kick all the ass, but even the more traditional Norse imagery would very much appeal to her. Women who guide warriors to Valhalla, and still with the wings and the swords and badassery.

To pick a creature she would dread being is a little trickier because she'd probably be cool with most fae. She would likely most dread being any kind of creature that could be forced into subservience of someone else. She values her autonomy and given her past, anything like the fable of the selkie woman who was tricked into being a fisherman's wife because he stole her skin would be something she'd dread. A genie in a bottle, or anything along that line would be just as bad. She has worked for people she doesn't like working for her whole life, she would like to not do that anymore.


3. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?


Her sister alive again. She may have started to learn how to live in a world without Natasha, but she was robbed of years that she should have had with her. She would likely do just about anything to bring Natasha back, because Natasha did the same in many respects for her.

Her sister, in her mind, did not deserve to die the way she did, didn't deserve to die at all. She struggled with her death for years, and while she's had more problems on top of that, feeling abandoned by her father and mother figures, drifting from one questionable job to the next for a boss she hates, it was all exacerbated by the fact that she didn't have her sister to reach out to. She didn't have anyone to reach out to. If she were able to mend that emptiness with a single wish, she absolutely would without even a second thought.


4. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?


Yelena is not a shy person by any means, and she's very straightforward and loud. She has an acerbic sense of humor and it's easy for her to find little amusements in small things. But with all of this her most outstanding personality trait is likely the deep compassion she has. Despite the fact that she is an assassin, that she has made her living killing people for money for most of her life, she feels deeply for others. She is naturally a protector, and wants to keep anyone she sees as needing any kind of protection safe at any cost.

This vulnerability often leaves her open to bone shattering heartbreak, and she can only push down so much devastation before it spills out of her. Still, she cares about others, and that part of her exists even in the darkest of times. It's what gives her strength when everything else seems hopeless, her desire to protect people, to fight for the good that exists in the small glimmers of hope she can see in the darkness.
